Welcome to the Holy Family Parish School Music Program PK-8!
It is indeed a beautiful thing bringing our music program back, now better than ever! I am honored to be the one who leads this effort. This year the children and I will have numerous opportunities to grow personally, musically and spiritually. The curriculum in all grades follows the Washington State Essential Learning Academic Requirements (EALRs). All students will participate in the Christmas and Spring concerts. Some of our classes will also participate in music-related field trips, which will be announced in the months to come. Below please read the highlights for each level.
Pre-Kindergarten / Kindergarten
- Students will learn through song, movement and rhythm instrument activities.
- They will discover their voices and will learn about the elements of music in developmentally appropriate ways.
1st, 2nd, and 3rd Grades
- Students will learn through song, movement and rhythm instruments the basics of music theory including reading melody and rhythm.
- Students will also learn the basics of music history.
4th and 5th Grades
- In addition to the basic curriculum outlined for the 1st through 3rd grades, students will learn the recorder. This is a beginning instrument that effectively gives students a chance to succeed in instrumental music, and it may encourage them to continue into band or orchestra.
6th, 7th, and 8th Grades
- Students will learn through song, rhythm instruments and research.
- All students will receive music theory instruction.
- Students will learn to become active listeners of music using their knowledge of music theory and the elements of music.
- Students will learn music history, including history of sacred music, and the impact that various periods, musicians and composers have had on music through the centuries.
- Making Music by Silver Burdett Publishers is the official middle school curriculum. It is an interactive, hands-on curriculum that allows students to select and tailor their learning according to specific interests.
Music is indeed the universal language of mankind. It transcends time, culture and all languages. As Plato said, “Music is a more potent instrument for education than any other.” I look forward to sharing the joyous journey of making and learning more about music with your children. You will receive monthly updates of this journey. Please feel free to call me with comments or suggestions!
In Christ,
